The Emergency Department (ED) of Careggi University Hospital has a longstanding tradition of integrating education, research, and clinical practice in acute medicine. For many years, it has served as a reference center for both national and international students and residents from medical and nursing schools. Our clinical research units have conducted numerous studies in collaboration with other leading national and international centers. These efforts have resulted in publications in some of the world’s most prestigious medical journals, including the European Heart JournalCirculationChest, and Annals of Emergency Medicine.

With over 100,000 adult patients treated annually, our ED is one of the largest in Europe. It serves as the trauma center for central Tuscany and acts as a referral hub for acute stroke, acute coronary and aortic syndromes, and ECMO support. The department includes an average of 100 beds, comprising a shock room, an intensive care area equipped for invasive monitoring and ventilation, an urgent care area, and a short stay/admission unit.

Our mission, as a team of dedicated and knowledgeable physicians, is to deliver the highest level of diagnostic accuracy and comprehensive care to patients with acute medical conditions. We are committed to providing not only expert clinical care but also compassionate, human-centered support.

Located in Florence—the cradle of the Renaissance—we draw daily inspiration from the city’s history of innovation and excellence. Motivated by the legacy of the great minds who once flourished here, we remain steadfast in our commitment to staying at the forefront of medical knowledge and clinical practice. Our team is continuously engaged in learning and applying the most recent advancements in emergency medicine to provide the best possible care for our patients.
