Il sempre più intenso movimento di persone che, per turismo o per motivi professionali, si recano in Paesi stranieri e i flussi migratori in costante aumento hanno determinato nell’ultimo ventennio la comparsa di patologie estranee alle nostre latitudini e la riscoperta di malattie ormai dimenticate.
Il Centro di Riferimento Regionale della Toscana per lo Studio e la Cura delle Malattie Tropicali nasce dall’esigenza di fornire un servizio a coloro che viaggiano all’estero e rientrano con sospetta patologia d’importazione e alle persone provenienti dalle aree più povere del pianeta, affetti da patologie la cui diagnosi e terapia richiedono mezzi e competenze mirate.
Il Centro è stato istituito con delibera della Giunta Regionale n. 216 del 2002 ed afferisce alla Struttura Organizzativa Dipartimentale Malattie Infettive e Tropicali dell’Azienda Ospedaliero-Universitaria areggi. Il Centro è costituito da un complesso integrato di laboratorio di ricerca, ambulatorio specializzato, Day Hospital e degenza ordinaria.
Il personale del Centro, afferente all’Azienda Ospedaliero-Universitaria Careggi e all’Università degli Studi di Firenze, mette a disposizione dei cittadini l’esperienza clinica e diagnostica, maturata in molti anni di attività clinica e di ricerca realizzate in Paesi Tropicali.

Attività

Attività assistenziale

  • Consulenza clinica-diagnostica ai medici di base e colleghi specialisti per l’approccio diagnostico, clinico e terapeutico al paziente con sospetta patologia tropicale
  • Assistenza diretta a persone con presunta patologia tropicale
  • Attività nell’ambito della Medicina dei Viaggi e delle Migrazioni, in particolare, assistenza ai viaggiatori di ritorno da paesi tropicale e agli immigrati regolari e irregolari
  • Attuazione di programmi di sorveglianza epidemiologica di malattie tropicali e di importazione in collaborazione con la Regione Toscana e con le strutture sanitarie locali
  • Partecipazione a TropNet, rete europea di sorveglianza delle patologie tropicali e d’importazione 

Attività didattica 

  • Informazione, formazione e aggiornamento di studenti e del personale sanitario sui temi della Medicina Tropicale
  • Organizzazione di seminari e congressi relativi all’approfondimento di temi specifici
  • Organizzazione del Corso di perfezionamento in Medicina Tropicale e Cooperazione Sanitaria
  • Organizzazione del Corso di perfezionamento in Ecografia e Malattie Infettive nei Paesi a Risorse Limitate
  • Organizzazione del Master interuniversitario di I livello Medicina Tropicale e Salute Globale

Attività scientifica

  • Attività di ricerca scientifica e cooperazione sanitaria da oltre venticinque anni in Paesi dell’America Latina su temi nel campo batteriologico, virale e parassitario
  • Coordinamento di progetti di ricerca internazionali realizzati con il contributo dell’Unione Europea, ONG italiane (MLAL, UCODEP, CMSR), Ministero Affari Esteri, Regione Toscana, Cassa di Risparmio di Firenze, 8×1000 Chiesa Valdese etc.
  • Pubblicazione dei risultati ottenuti sulle principali riviste scientifiche del settore
